Governor Roy Cooper has issued a “stay at home” order for North Carolina. Many parents might have questions about the impact this order has on existing child custody orders or agreements. Governor Cooper’s order specifically states that travel between residences for purposes of child custody or visitation arrangements is essential travel.  For a typical family following a court-ordered custody schedule, this means that both parents should continue to honor the custody exchanges.  Parents will need to communicate with each other if work schedules or changing responsibilities at home will affect the normal schedule.  Co-parenting requires open lines of communication while the “stay at home” order remains in effect so that your children are as safe and healthy as possible.

Every family situation is different, and we are experiencing rapid developments in our communities. If you have questions about how the statewide “stay at home” order applies to you and your children, please contact Hester & Payseur, PLLC at (704) 829-8295 for a consultation.
