Parenting coordinators are individuals appointed by the judge in a custody order who assist parents in resolving disagreements, develop methods of collaboration, and have the authority to resolve disputes between parents if those disputes are not addressed in the order.  He or she can be appointed in North Carolina in high conflict custody cases. The North Carolina General Statutes define high conflict cases if the parents demonstrate an ongoing pattern of any of the following:

  1. Excessive litigation.
  2. Anger and distrust.
  3. Verbal abuse.
  4. Physical aggression or threats of physical aggression.
  5. Difficulty communicating about and cooperating in the care of the minor children.
  6. Conditions that in the discretion of the court warrant the appointment of a parenting coordinator.

Parenting coordinators have to meet certain standards to qualify and must receive training before being appointed. The parenting coordinator can be used in cases where both sides have an attorney or if either party is unrepresented.
