We have learned that North Carolina citizens have received phone calls from scammers posing as law firms.  The phone number shows up as a law firm’s number, and the caller pretends to be calling from a law firm to collect a debt.  The caller tells the person that if the person doesn’t provide a credit card number to pay off the debt, then a sheriff will come arrest him or her.

Hester & Payseur, PLLC DOES NOT collect debt via phone call. If you receive a phone call to collect debt purporting to be from this law firm, please do not provide personal or financial information to the caller. If possible, write down the exact name of the law office that appeared on the caller ID and hang up. Please call the State Bar Attorney Client Assistance Program at 919-828-4620 to describe what happened.  Please also contact the North Carolina Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Agency by calling 877-566-7226 or visiting www.ncdoj.gov/Consumer.aspx. Report telemarketing fraud to the FBI.
